How naive is the average US citizen regarding gas prices?

Long term thinking is what's been missing from our culture and politics for decades. It's seeped into our culture deeply. We don't plan ahead or try to forsee the needs of our children. We run up the bill every chance we get and then blame the next person when they're not able to magically fix it.
